7 THINGS NOT TO DO TO BRAND NEW CAR.

Truth be told, the excitement to sit behind the steering wheel of your new car is barely controllable. All you want to do is rev up the engine and test the performance limits promised in the specs. You might want to reconsider the urges because things could go south sooner than expected. What most car buyers do not know until they open up the owner’s manual is that there is a breaking process for every brand new car. For the first 1,000miles, the car needs a special kind of handling. Here are a few don’ts to take you through handling a brand new car.

1. Avoid Full Throttle
This is also known as flooring. This is operating the car at maximum velocity. Flooring at full throttle will wear down the piston rings and damage the engine.2. Do not use max RPM’s
Manufacturers advise not to exceed 4000 RPM’s (Revolutions Per Minute) for the first 500 miles. However, some cars are broken in by factory technicians during production such that the buyer does not have to go through the breaking process themselves. An example of this car is the Acura NSX

3. Do not use Cruise Control
Cruise Control is an electronic device that is used to maintain a selected constant speed without using the accelerator. A new car requires varied RPM’s to ensure a constantly changing load and speed.
4. Avoid short distance travel
It is important to ensure that the engine reaches operating temperature for each trip at least for the first 1,000 miles. Reaching the operating temperature ensures proper oil flow.
5. Do not let the gas go below ¼ tank
Running low on gas damages your vehicle because the gas acts as a coolant for the electric fuel pump. Low gas will let the pump suck in air which will cause it to wear out prematurely. Replacing the pump will cost you much more than ensuring your tank is more than a quarter full.
6. Avoid Towing
This is especially applicable for cars that are not designed for towing. This will unnecessarily strain the car before it is fully broken in.
7. Do not ignore the Owner’s manual
The owner’s manual clearly states all the DO’s and DON’T’s you need to know about the maintenance of the car. Read it to get the most out of your new purchase.
