9 Car Myths You Should Stop Believing
Although no one can quite pinpoint the exact source of a myth, we all fall victim to them. They have been engraved into our minds and progressively earned the title “fact” . Here are 10 of those ‘facts’ that are actually NOT true.
1. Shooting a car’s gas tank will make it explode.
A lot of movies have used this untrue stunt.Discovery’s “Mythbusters” proved that in real life, that bullets go right through the tank without fire. There’s no ignition, and no explosion. A bullet to the tank does not cause an explosion.
2. Fill you car with jet fuel to make it more powerful.
A gas-powered engine will not start if you put anything but gas in the tank. Conventional car engines can not combust kerosene.
3. You get more for your money when you fill your gas tank in the morning.
It is believed that when temperatures are cool, gasoline is denser, so you get more fuel per gallon pumped. While the logic is true, gasoline is stored in underground tanks, where the temperature hardly fluctuates. So the gas coming out of the nozzle is basically always at the same density, whenever you decide to pump.
4. Manual transmission engines have better fuel economy than automatic engines.
In recent advances in the technology (like the continuously variable transmission, which offers an infinite range of gear ratios), automatic cars have been improved in terms of fuel economy to be just as good and in some cases better than manuals.
5. You can trigger an explosion if you use your cell phone at a gas station.
There is no documented incident where the use of a wireless phone was found to cause a fire or explosion at a gas station, and scientific testing has not established any dangerous link between wireless phones and fuel vapors.
6. Hiding behind a car will protect you from gunfire.
Another common movie stunt is to hide behind your car during a shoot out. Some bullets may not be powerful enough to cut through the steel, but it’s not a safe move.Cars are not cover, They are concealment.
7. Premium fuel makes your non-premium car run better.
More expensive gas isn’t purer or cleaner than the regular version. It is less combustible, which makes a difference for powerful engines, but has no effect in a less powerful engine.
8. Off-brand gas will hurt your engine.
There is no reason to avoid “off-brand” gas stations that charge less. Named-brand stations l may have extra engine-cleaning additives in their gasoline, but using generic gas won’t harm your engine in any way.
9. You never need to change your oil at all.
While most modern cars can go as far as 10,000 miles without fresh oil, the occasional change is still necessary. Eventually, as the oil gets dirtier and dirtier, it will stop lubricating and the engine will gradually wear and fail.
