According to Wikipedia, A crossover or a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) is a vehicle built on a car platform and combines features of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) with features from astation wagon or hatchback.
A sport utility vehicle or suburban utility vehicle (SUV) on the other hand is a vehicle classified as a light truck, but operated as a family vehicle. They are similar to a large station wagon or estate cars, usually equipped with four-wheel drive for on- or off-road ability.
The Crossover vehicles have been further categorized into 4 groups:

  • Mini crossovers: Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Ford EcoSport, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Creta, Mini Countryman, Nissan Juke.
  • Compact crossovers: BMW X1, Dacia Duster, Ford Kuga, Jeep Compass, Nissan X-Trail.
  • Mid-sized crossovers: Acura ZDX, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Ford Edge, Volkswagen Touareg.
  • Full-sized crossovers: Buick Enclave, Ford Flex, Ford Explorer, Mazda CX-9.
Although their names have been used interchangeably, these two types of vehicle are quite distinctly different in terms of :

  • Platform:  A crossover is based on a car’s platform, while an SUV uses the chassis of a truck. The result is that crossovers use “unibody” architecture, meaning the body and frame are one piece, while SUVs use a “body on frame” design. In that case, the body is built separately from the frame and placed together later.
  • Build: Crossovers are mostly built to handle with the ride quality and convenience of a car, while SUVs are built for more challenging terrain, larger payloads, or hauling duties.
The term “SUV” is often applied to both crossovers and SUVs. This was before, “SUV” brought up negative associations with large size and poor gas mileage. That’s when many automakers started using the term “crossover” to describe a vehicle that was “crossing over” from the practicality of an SUV to the drivability and fuel efficiency of a car.

If you’re unsure whether your vehicle of choice uses a car-based unibody design or body-on-frame construction, the safest bet is to use the term “SUV.” That acronym is still used to describe nearly anything with available all-wheel drive and raised ground clearance, so you’ll probably be safe.
